Ideally you would use excel related activities like write range or write cell

How is it different from applying the filter rather than clicking?

Instead of trying to select from the dropdown, Use Excel Process Scope and Write Cell. If the value you are writing is from that dropdown option, excel will not complain/give error.

Only option is Ui Automation using Activities - Select Item activity.
