how do i open a new word document using UiPath, do i use word application scope?

You mean to create a new Word document using UiPath? The Word Application Scope activity has a “Create if not exists” property that will create the file if it doesn’t exist yet.

do i need to add in a file path for it to run?

Yes you would need to provide it the path to the Word document that you would like it to create, in the file path field.
