Chrome v130 will stop running MV2 extensions

Background

As mentioned in the Chrome MV2 deprecation timeline, Chrome will soon stop running MV2 extensions:

Our testing indicates that this will happen in Chrome v130, which is currently in the Dev channel.
Chrome v130 is scheduled to reach the Stable channel on October 9th, 2024.
See the Chromium release schedule.

Initially, the MV2 deprecation will be controllable by this Chrome flag:
chrome://flags/#extension-manifest-v2-deprecation-disabled

Impact on UiPath extensions for Chrome

All LTS versions and patches of UiPath Studio released after April 2022 install by default UiPath MV3 extensions for Chrome and Edge.
This means that if you are using any of these versions of UiPath Studio then this change will not impact you in any way:

  • 2022.4 and all newer versions
  • 2021.10.8+
  • 2020.10.14+
  • 2019.10.9+

If you are using an older version of UiPath Studio and want to avoid any risk of this disruption from this change in Chrome v130 we recommend upgrading to UiPath Studio v2024.10.
UiPath Studio v2024.10 can be downloaded from:

  • Product Downloads in the UiPath Customer Portal.
  • Resource Center in the UiPath Automation Cloud. To access Resource Center you need to login in your Automation Cloud Organization and click the Help button on the left navigation bar.

Upgrading older UiPath extensions for Chrome to MV3

Chrome Web Store statistics indicate that UiPath MV2 extensions for Chrome installed by older versions of UiPath Studio are still heavily used:

Given the high user base of these extensions and the fact that they will no longer work starting with Chrome v130 we have decided to upgrade them to the MV3 format.
We intend to roll out this upgrade gradually starting September 16th 2024.

Doing so will ensure that these extensions will continue to work with future versions of Chrome.

Impact of this upgrade:

  • No changes will be required to any UiPath Studio automation projects.
  • If you have installed these extensions using ExtensionInstallForcelist, the extensions will be automatically updated and no action will be required.
Otherwise, you will be prompted by the browser to manually re-enable the extension after it upgrades.
  • If you have installed these extensions in Edge, then you will also receive this upgrade.

Known issues with MV3 extensions

Even though MV3 extensions have become a lot more stable in the past year, there are still a few known issues that affect them.
These issues and their workarounds are described here.

Impact on UiPath extensions for Edge

Edge has not yet resumed the MV2 deprecation process, see the Edge MV3 timeline.

We will continue to monitor changes in Edge and will post an update here when required.
To avoid any risk disruption in the future, we strongly recommend upgrading to UiPath Studio v2024.10.

Please provide feedback

Please reach out to us if you are still using an UiPath MV2 extension for Chrome and you have concerns regarding this upgrade.
Our goal is to do all reasonable efforts to minimize disruptions caused by this change.
