Default Roles – further simplified

A little over a year back we introduced Default Roles in UiPath Orchestrator to simplify the creation and editing of roles and permissions. We have seen many of you make use of these default roles in your day-to-day automations, and we’re glad they are helping you save both time and effort.

Some customers have customized these roles to suit their automation use cases, and we wanted to let you know about some changes we are making to simplify and clarify roles that will change how this works going forward. There is no immediate action required on your part.

Beginning February 21, 2022 in Automation Cloud, we will standardize the Default Roles in the Orchestrator and make them read-only. You will be able to view the permissions assigned to the different default roles, but you will not be able to make any changes to the default roles themselves. This means when you apply the default roles, you will also have a known, standard set of permissions. However, you can still use them as a base template to create customized roles – you won’t have to start from scratch.

If you have already customized some default roles and applied them, no problem! As part of this change, we will automatically create new customized roles with your customized settings and apply them everywhere you previously had the customized default role applied. These roles will be named Role name – Custom. To be clear, the permissions you had set up before in your environment will not change at all. They will just be applied using the new Role name – Custom role.

For example, if you had modified the permissions of the Folder Administrator role, then the modified role will appear as Folder Administrator – Custom, and you will see that role name applied to any entities you had previously applied your customized Folder Administrator role to.

The standard Folder Administrator role will return as part of the Default Roles, with the standard permissions, and will remain read-only. Going forward, you can use the default roles directly without needing to add these roles to your tenant from Orchestrator settings. The Default Roles are now available by default to any new tenants, or to tenants who did not manually add them.

The new modifications in the Default Roles are planned to be effective in Automation Cloud from 21st February and the same will be made available for the on-premises version in our next release.

Perfect addition :innocent:

Something interesting :+1:

This sounds good. I find the permissions in Orchestrator to be the opposite of straightforward. Anything to make this easier is welcome.
