Where suspended variable data is saved?

When a job is suspended, where is its variable data saved?
Which part of the architecture needs to fail to lose the variable data once the job is resumed?
I would assume it is not stored in memory, as that would be too unsafe and easy to break

The workflow is persisted using WWF persistence. More details → HERE
The serialized workflow is saved on Orchestrator storage.
