Update Column - Cannot Perform

I understand that this is a generic question, but I am hoping someone has a basic example that they can share. I have asked more specific questions on this forum, but they have not been answered.

We are able to read/write data into the grid of a SmartSheet sheet, however we cannot update any column properties. Does anyone have an example workflow of successfully using the Update Column operation that they would be willing to share?
