Hi All - I have just started exploring using UiPath Studio and currently only have access to the browser version in my firm.
Could I double check - if we are able to use the App/Web Recorder feature in the browser version? or do we need to have the Desktop version installed?
I am trying to login to a website that needs multiple level of Authentication, and it would also be good to hear from your expertise if this is achievable as well. For ex., I login to a website - enter my Username and Pwd (Step 1 - Generic Login), which then asks me to enter an Authentication Code (Step 2 - Authentication) and further, I have to use a different set of login credentials (Step 3 - Database specific access) to access my application. Is this possible as well?
You need to install UiPath Robot/Assistant on the machine where you want to Devlop/run the automation.
Yes, the scenario you described is achievable. You can automate multiple authentication steps. This seems a test automation use case, where you need to validate the login flow using multiple levels of authentication and different credentials.
However, the only requirement is that Studio Web and the target web app must be opened in the same browser, and the UiPath extension must be installed for that browser.
However - due to my time limitations and technology limitations - if I want the automation to start after I login to the application manually - are we able to do this?
So I login manually first into the application and then I trigger the automation which just continues to work on the logged in browser screen. Is this possible?
Yes, you can automate that way by logging in manually and then ask the bot to perform the rest of the steps.
But as a best practice, make it an Attended Automation by automating the login part as well.
Firstly, Automate the part where the bot enters Username and Password, after that as the application requires Authentication code, you can just make the bot keep checking if the authentication code is entered into the respective field for every 10 seconds. If the code is entered then let it move ahead, if not ask it to keep repeating until the authentication code is inserted.
In this approach, you will be triggering the bot manually and when the authentication code screen is opened, you should just enter the code and everything else will be performed by the bot.
You can manually log in first and then start the automation on the already-open browser, provided the automation runs in the same browser session/profile. UiPath supports browser automation for an already-open browser session.
So the flow can simply be:
Manual Login → Start Automation → Continue from logged-in page
Just make sure the UiPath browser extension is installed and the automation targets that browser.
Yes, it is possible. Just one point: when using the Use Browser/Application scope, set Open option to Never for the browser/application. This will allow UiPath to attach to the currently active session.
The App/Web Recorder or recording feature is generally available in UiPath Studio Desktop. The browser/web version has some limitations compared with the desktop version.
For your multi-level authentication process, automation may be possible depending on the authentication method:
Step 1: Username and Password → Can be automated.
Step 2: Authentication Code → Can be automated if the code is available through email, API, or another accessible source. If it requires manual MFA approval or an authenticator app, additional security considerations apply.
Step 3: Different application/database credentials → Can also be automated using secure credentials.
I would recommend checking with your organization’s UiPath administrator about access to UiPath Studio Desktop or the available browser-based Studio features.
Also, avoid hardcoding credentials in the workflow. Use Orchestrator Assets or a secure credential store instead.
Hi @iampnkz - I tried this. However, the automation keeps ending up with an error saying that the “Could not find target application” - even though the browser is open and and I have logged into the application as well.
Full error log is as below:

This usually happens because Use Browser cannot attach to the Edge session that was opened manually.
Try opening Edge and logging in first, then use Indicate in Browser from the existing session and make sure the UiPath Browser Extension is enabled.
If it still gives the same error, the current Use Browser activity may be configured to open/find a specific browser instance rather than attach to the existing one.
You need to click ‘Debug on Cloud’ and select 'On local machine. This will connect Studio Cloud to your UiPath Assistant, allowing you to run the automation on your local machine.
Currently, it is trying to find the application on the cloud server instead of your local machine.
