How to open a workflow?

I am opening a Windows project created in Studio 21.4.3 in the current version 26.0.202 Preview. When I tried to check the entire flow, the workflow is accessible but grayed out, and I cannot open it. This might be due to compatibility issues between the old Excel package, the XAML, and the current Studio 26 Preview, which is preventing me from opening the internal flow of ExcelApplicationScope_14 in the designer.

I’m not very knowledgeable about these things myself, so I’ve done a bit of research and tried various solutions, but I can’t find a resolution. If anyone knows the answer, I would appreciate your help.
Thank you very much!

This looks like a compatibility issue when opening an older Windows project in a newer Studio Preview version.

I would suggest first checking the project’s dependencies and confirming whether the old UiPath.Excel.Activities package is compatible with Studio 26.0.202. You can also try opening a copy of the project after updating the dependencies to supported versions.

If the workflow is still grayed out, check whether the XAML is read-only or whether it is a library/component workflow rather than a directly editable workflow. Also, try opening the project in an intermediate Studio version closer to 21.4 before migrating it to the latest version.

Since this is an old project, I would recommend taking a backup before changing or migrating the XAML/dependencies.

Hi @k.yamanaka ,
This seems to be a compatibility issue between the old Studio project and the latest version. Try repairing or updating the Excel Activities dependency from Manage Packages. If possible, first open the project in an older compatible Studio version, fix the dependencies, and then migrate it.

Thanks

Hi @k.yamanaka
As everybody mentioned, it is a compatibility issue.

You can try making the UiPath Excel package to support the “Lowest Applicable Version” from the manage package option.

Once selected, refresh your project, and it should work.

Hi @k.yamanaka,

Check if any Runtime package is installed. If yes, uninstall it and install the corresponding package with the same version.

For example:
UiPath.System.Activities.Runtime 21.10.0 → Remove this and install UiPath.System.Activities 21.10.0.

Let me know if this works.

Thanks!

@k.yamanaka Can you check the Output/Errors panel for any missing or incompatible activity/package errors.

Hello

A Windows project created in the era of Studio 21.4.3

Given that Studio 21.4.3 does not support Windows projects (.net5/6/8), I assume you can only create Windows legacy projects. Have you already converted it to a Windows project?

If possible, it would be helpful to share a screenshot of the occurring issue, but as an immediate action:

  1. Check the dependencies in the project panel to see if the blue box below is red → If it is red, right-click and try to repair the dependencies.

  1. Update each activity package to the latest version from the “Manage Packages” option in the ribbon menu.

That might help.

Update UiPath.Excel.Activities to the latest version (≥2.11.0) to unlock modern Excel activities, open the project in an intermediate Studio version before moving to 26 Preview. Ensure to backup your project before making dependency or XAML changes.

@k.yamanaka Since this project was created in Studio 21.4.3, it was most likely a Windows-Legacy project. Plzc try the below steps:

  1. Open the project and check whether it is still Windows-Legacy or already converted to Windows.
  2. In the Project panel, expand Dependencies and check if any package is showing in red or as unresolved.
  3. If you see any issue, especially with UiPath.Excel.Activities, repair or restore that dependency first.
  4. Restart Studio and try opening the workflow again.
  5. If it still doesn’t open, go to Manage Packages and update only the package that is causing the issue. I wouldn’t update all packages at once because it may create more compatibility problems in an old project.
  6. If the project is still Windows-Legacy, make a copy of it and convert the copy to Windows.
  7. Open the converted project and check the workflow again. If any activity becomes unresolved, update or replace only that activity/package.

Everyone,
Thank you for your kind responses.
I tried the content you provided, but unfortunately, it didn’t work well, so I had to recreate it.

I apologize for having to start over after all the help you offered.

I think there will be things I won’t understand when creating anew, so I may reach out for your advice again.
Thank you for your support when that time comes.
