How to migrate or promote a Modern Document Understanding (DU) project from one tenant to another?

Issue:

How to migrate or promote a Modern Document Understanding (DU) project between tenants?

Resolution:

Scenario 1 - For workflows using UiPath.DocumentUnderstanding.Activities

As of 3-MAR-2025, the only way to move a Modern project/dataset from tenant to tenant is by following these steps:

  1. Export annotated dataset from tenant A.

  2. Import into new project (with same name) in tenant B.

  3. Install Studio and point to tenant B.

  4. Open the project and reconfigure Project and Extractor in the Extract Document Data activity.

  5. Publish to tenant B.

  6. Run the project.

Scenario 2 - Use UiPath.IntelligentOCR.Activities

An alternative solution to work around the above limitation with using UiPath.DocumentUnderstanding.Activities is to use UiPath.IntelligentOCR.Activities v6.22.0+ instead.

Remove Extract Document Data and Classify Document activities and replace with the Document Understanding Project Extractor in Document Understanding Project Classifier respectively.

These activities are currently at an advantage because they can use variables in the Project and Version fields, so the project name and version can be managed in an Asset in Orchestrator.

Here are some things to consider when using UiPath.IntelligentOCR.Activities:

  • UiPath.IntelligentOCR.Activities v6.22.0+ is compatible with UIAutomation.Activities versions

  • that are 24.10.0 or later.

  • Beginning with v6.19.0, installing the UiPath.IntelligentOCR.Activities package automatically installs the UiPath.DocumentUnderstanding.ML.Activities package. So, you do not need to install it separately.

  • Do not install UiPath.DocumentUnderstanding.Activities & UiPath.IntelligentOCR.Activities in the same project.
