Get Credential/Set Credential Fails with Error Code 1503

Why does UiPath return "The asset does not have a value associated with this robot (Error 1503)" when using credential activities?

Product(s)

  • UiPath Studio / Robot Executor
  • Package: UiPath.System.Activities

Issue Description

When attempting to use Get Credential or Set Credential activities for an Orchestrator credential asset, the process fails with errors similar to:

Root Cause

This is expected behavior.

The issue occurs when:

  • The credential asset is configured as a per-robot asset, and
  • The robot executing the process is not assigned a credential value for that asset

Key Concept:

  • Per-robot assets require a specific value assigned to each robot
  • The Get Credential and Set Credential activities run under the executing robot's identity and permissions
  • If no credential is defined for that robot → Orchestrator returns Error 1503

How It Works

ActivityBehavior
Get CredRetrieves credentials using the robot's context
Set CredentialUpdates credentials using the robot's context
BothRequire the robot to have access to the asset in Orchestrator

Resolution / Solution Steps

Option 1: Assign Credential Value to the Robot (Recommended)

  1. Go to UiPath Orchestrator
  2. Navigate to: Tenant → Assets
  3. Locate the credential asset
  4. Ensure the asset is configured as Per Robot
  5. Assign a credential value to the specific robot:
    • Open the asset
    • Add / Edit the robot-specific value

6. Save changes

7. Re-run the process

Option 2: Convert Asset to Global (If Applicable)

Use this if the same credential should be shared across robots.

  1. Open the asset in Orchestrator
  2. Change Scope to Global
  3. Enter a global credential value
  4. Save changes
  5. Re-run the process

Option 3: Ensure Robot Has Proper Permissions

  1. Go to Tenant → Manage Access → Roles
  2. Verify the robot’s role includes:
    • Assets → View
    • Assets → Edit (required for Set Credential)

3. Assign the role to the robot if necessary

Option 4: Validate Execution Context

Ensure:

  • The process runs under the expected robot identity
  • The robot belongs to the same folder where the asset is defined
  • No folder-level access restrictions block the asset

Option 5: Validate Asset Type in Workflow

  • Confirm the activity references the correct asset name
  • Ensure the asset type is Credential, not Text/Boolean/Integer

Best Practices

  • Use Global assets for shared credentials
  • Use Per-robot assets only when credentials differ per machine
  • Always validate:
    • Robot-to-asset assignment
    • Folder and role permissions
  • Maintain naming consistency to avoid referencing errors

Additional Notes

  • Both activities inherit permissions from the executing robot
  • No manual authentication override is possible within these activities
  • Error 1503 specifically indicates missing robot-to-asset mapping
