Excel File is not updated about half the time

We have a process that reads an attachment from an email, does quite a bit of data manipulation using the data in the attachment and then finally updates a spreadsheet that is stored locally. This process always completes successfully but about half the time it sporadically does not update the spreadsheet at all. Any ideas as to why this could be happening?

May be because of background Excel processes running or closing the excel file is not happening properly.
Once you update the excel or before start of process, kill all the background excel processes running.
This will help you for smooth running of process.
