Difference between "machines" and "installed versions"

I have two laptops, a mac and a windows. It is my understanding that Studio can only run on the windows one, so that’s where I will do the development of automations. But is it possible to RUN an automation on the mac? I have installed the UiPath Assistant on my mac, is that enough? Should I set up each laptop as SEPARATE MACHINES in Orchestrator? I see that it’s possible to set up the different laptops under the same “machine” as an “installed version”. This doesn’t seem intuitive to me.

Can someone explain all this to a newbie? The docs and tutorials I have found only confuse me more.

Few things here

1. Only cross platform automations can be run on mac os and not windows or legacy automations…so even if you develop using studio your compatibility selected should be cross platform
   

   

2. When you setup a machine as template the configurations should be similar which is not the case here so you need to setup two different…means if all machines are look alikes then machine templates work…else they would not…important one to note below is same physical setup
