Cannot open older UiPath project in Community Edition (Citizen Developer)

Description

I installed UiPath using the Automation Cloud download, and it only gives me the Studio “Citizen Developer” profile. When I try to open an older UiPath project that I built a few years ago, Studio will not load it.

These are the errors I get:

Project is incompatible with Studio for Citizen Developers. You can open it in Studio and fix the errors.

Error converting value “Modern” to type UiPath.Project.ProjectData.ProjectProfile.

A workflow project is already loaded. Unload that one before loading a new project.

Is there any way to open older UiPath projects using the Community Edition, or to switch my install from Citizen Developer to full Studio? If not, is there a way to download an older Studio version that can load legacy projects so I can upgrade them?

@Phil_Kelsey

Check the license you have on the orchestrator → Admin

Most likely you have Free license which doesn’t provide access to the Studio but gives access to StudioX only.

With Citizen Developer profile you cannot open, upgrade, or convert old projects.

you can get Full Studio on Community Edition, but you must switch the license from Cloud to Local.

Let me know if you require help in switching it.

@Phil_Kelsey

  1. Firstly yours must be a free plan and not community
  2. Legacy has been deprecated now so in the new community version you might not be able to edit as there are so many changes that came in
  3. then best version you can try is with 23.10 or so which still supports legacy and has conversion built in
  4. For getting older versions you need enterprise lciense with community you cannot
  5. You have option to open and edit old process , but as said you need a license mostly

cheers

TLDR is no.

The functionality to open legacy projects was deprecated and no longer available in the latest releases.

If you have a paid licence you can install an older version that could do this, but the community edition doesn’t support this.

Thanks All
I ended up getting the 60-day trial for the Enterprise Edition. After that I plan to get the monthly developer license. Hopefully, that will work.

The process was challenging. I created Windows Server VM on Google Cloud Services. I download & installed the cloud version, but it would not open my legacy project. I created a new project and copied the workflows into the file directory. Eventually, with much tweaking, I was able to get the old workflows to appear. However, I found I was not able to save the project as the workflows were not recognized event though Studio displayed them just fine. When I attempted to install the 60 day trial, I found the VM was locked to the Citizen edition. I created a new VM but somehow ended up with the Citizens edition again. I redownload the trial but the UiPath install of the Citizens edition was broken and every attempt to delete the old install files manually failed as something continued to lock the UiPath files. I ended up creating a 3rd new VM. However, I was not able to download the msi containing Studio. I ended up copying the .msi from the old vm to the new vm and was able to install after a few more Window/VM permissions issues. I was able to open the old project now on the is 3rd vm in the community edition, make changes and save.

Hopefully this information will be helpful to anyone having the same issues

Monthly plan is a great choice!

However, you can do this more easily once on a paid version.

Install for example Studio 24.4 LTS, this is not available for Community Plan members, but is for paid plans, in these older versions Legacy project was still available AND they had a converter built in that can convert your projects for you. It would be a much better way to upgrade your old projects.
