Probably missing the obvious
I have an opened excel sheet on my screen that is opened bij another application. So I want to attach to this sheet and read the contents to a datatable
Attaching make a UIElement and I can’t seem to read the contents to excel as UiPath says it is a UIelement.
Problem:
I can’t save the file somewhere else as it is remote without 365 licence
I can’t open the original because I can’t reach the folder from UiPath
So how do I get the data into a datatable?
Hi @Luke69
Use the Modern Excel activities and add an “Excel Process Scope” activity.
In the properties panel, select the “Process mode” → “Reuse if exists”:
By doing this, it will automatically latch onto to an open Excel session.
Let me know if this works ![]()
Doesn’t seem to want to read the file.
I tried inside an attach window scope (this attached to the excel window) and an use browser/application with no effect. looking inside the excel reference is looks as if the use file activity decides to create a new file named “hello.xlsx”
If the excel is opened on local machine and not from Citrix or virtual machine, it will be opened from some local temporary file path.
I would suggest to get the local file path from excel using Ui automation and then use that path for the further actions using Excel activities.
Here is a sample working code.
BlankProcess.zip (743.8 KB)
If it only where that easy. Alas, not local and i can’t reference to the remote temp folder, where the file is stored, from UiPath. So I only have the opened excel on my screen, or actually an opened .csv in excel.
did you try clicking save as and save it to a shared folder to access from your local UiPath as well
if the above is not a option then try with cv table extraction …not so good way but as citrix and you are unable to save this is the option you would have
cheers
“I can’t save the file somewhere else as it is remote without 365 licence”
the remote has no 365 licence so these options, as well as sharing, are disabled by Bill Gates’s team
So may I know if there is no o365 license is it that it is opened in readonly by application
Also cv extract table did you try that?
cheers
Interesting, can you show how the excel file is open? Because your excel on machine should have some file path reference to open that file and as it’s being opened means your machine do have access to that file path.
it is opened throught citrix where the temp folder is a personal temp folder on a remote machine. There is no reference i can find on my local machine.
What application opens the Excel file initially?
@Luke69 that’s it. This was the missing part. Unfortunately you have only option of CV Extract Table activity.
it is so remote that if I try to select the data in the sheet, and paste it in a new excel, or notepad, it returns the tekst coped locally whenever before, not the remote tekst.
It is like looking at the data through a one way mirror
copy paste might not work as expected
please try with cv table extraction
also I am little surprised on how the file is opened without excel license on remote machine
cheers
CV table extraction works, in so far, that you only get the data on screen.
I have taken a different route now to approach and extract the data via another output. More work an definitely more steps in the flow, but this allows me to export a csv to a location of choice.
Having not the solution exacly i will mark my own as solution to close the topic.
The input from all has brought me extra knowledge, so thank you all.
