Why are annotations not visible when hovering over Library activities after publishing the Library and using it as a dependency in another project?
Issue Description
Annotations added to a workflow for documentation or logical explanation purposes do not display when hovering over the activity after a Library project is published and used as a dependency in another project. Instead, the tooltip shows "Included in <LibraryName>" for specific workflows.
Steps to Reproduce
In UiPath Studio, annotations are added inside workflows of a Library project for documentation or logic explanation purposes.
Annotations may initially be visible when hovering over the Library activity once used as a dependency in another project. However, after the following actions occur:
- Saving or editing workflows
- Creating workflow arguments
- Automatic generation of
.xaml.json - Publishing the Library
- Installing the Library as a dependency in another project
The annotations may no longer appear. Hovering over the activity instead displays: Included in <LibraryName>
Expected Behavior
Annotations added within a workflow for documentation or logical explanation purposes should remain visible when hovering over the activity after a Library project is published and consumed as a dependency in another project.
Resolution
This behavior occurs because tooltip display for Library activities is controlled through Activity Layout metadata, stored in the .xaml.json file. To display custom annotation text, the Tooltip field must be configured manually.
Steps to Resolve
- Open the Library project in UiPath Studio.
- Navigate to the affected .xaml workflow.
- Right-click the workflow.
- Select: Activity Layout
- In the Activity Layout settings, update the Tooltip field with the desired annotation text.
- Save the workflow.
- Open the corresponding .xaml.json file and confirm the tooltip text has been updated.
- Publish the Library again.
- In the consuming project, update the dependency version.
- Hover over the activity in the activities panel or Designer panel.
Expected result: Custom tooltip and annotation text display correctly.
Root Cause
When workflows inside a Library contain arguments, UiPath Studio generates a corresponding .xaml.json file. This file stores designer metadata such as:
- Activity Layout
- Tooltip text
- Display configuration
When the Library is consumed as a dependency, Studio prioritizes tooltip metadata from .xaml.json over standard activity annotations. If the Tooltip field is blank, Studio displays "Included in <LibraryName>" instead of the annotation text.
